The Technical University of Munich plans to strengthen its research and teaching in chip design at its Heilbronn Campus from the upcoming winter term 2026/2027. Within a timeframe of around five years, the establishment of a new Master’s programme in chip design at the TUM Heilbronn Campus is a midterm goal. A particular focus of the research and new degree programme will be on enabling chip design using ‘open source’ design tools.
The Chair of Computer Architecture and Operating Systems (CAOS), led by Prof. Carsten Trinitis, invites applications for two fully funded PhD student positions at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), Campus Heilbronn. We seek strong candidates excited about computer architecture and hardware development and specifically invite applications by members of underrepresented groups in Computer Science.
Starting as of now we offer two positions as
Scientific Researcher Chip Design (m/f/d) – 100%, TV-L E13
for the organisation of courses and research in the abovementioned areas. Education is given a high priority at TUM. The quality of teaching is of particular importance. The purpose of this position is to organise courses for the newly established specialisation programme in chip design for the Master in „Information Engineering“ in Heilbronn which is taught in English.
About us
The Professorship for Computer Architecture and Operating Systems at TUM Campus Heilbronn covers a broad range of research focus areas in computer architecture, parallel processing and hardware-oriented applications and optimisations as well as operating systems.
Requirements
• MSc in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Microelectronics or a related discipline.
• Strong expertise in digital design, computer architecture, and domain-specific/high-performance computing systems.
• Nice to have (but not mandatory) background in one of the following tracks: full flow digital VLSI design (RTL-to-GDS), FPGA prototype of complex digital system and operating system bring-up, and modern compilation toolchain.
• Experience in and enthusiasm for teaching or tutoring.
• Ability to think and act in a networked manner and to work in a team.
• Experience in project coordination, supervision, or grant application is an advantage.
• Fluent in English.
Tasks
The main task associated with the position comprises helping in the development organisation of existing and upcoming lab courses and lectures in computer architecture and hardware design in Heilbronn. The lab courses are held in the first and second semester of the master programme, respectively. The research focus can be freely chosen upon agreement with the supervisor, e.g. in educational research. As part of the doctorate, several scientific papers are to be prepared and published. Further tasks include the organisation of related courses as well as the supervision of theses.
