A healthy ocean is essential to global well-being, biodiversity, and includes critical ecosystems underpinning all life on earth. Despite its values, the ocean is under immense pressure from human activities, threatening its ability to support human well-being, with disproportionate impacts on vulnerable communities. The majority of these pressures come from economic activities related to the ocean (“ocean economy”) such as fishing, aquaculture, coastal development, and shipping. Globally the ocean economy is worth over $4t AUD/yr and is expanding at twice the rate of the mainstream economy. At the same time, the gap in funding to protect and manage ocean health is at least $266b AUD/year and growing rapidly. Not only does this put the future of the ocean at risk, it also risks the entire global economy: over two-thirds of all publicly listed companies are at risk due to ocean decline. Investing a sustainable ocean economy (SOE) however can reduce economic losses by $8t AUD by 2037, yield six times more food and create 12 million new jobs by 2030. In a SOE, ocean health and ocean wealth are held in balance, and sufficient and durable finance for the management of ocean health is provided from the SOE. Despite clear evidence that achieving SOE will be better economically, ecologically and socially, market barriers hinder the transition. Key market barriers include inadequate policies, funding, capacities, and pipelines of investable SOE deals. This talk will dive into the global efforts to align capital flows with SDG 14.

Die Technische Universität München (TUM) verstetigt am Standort Freising-Weihenstephan ihren Ruf als internationales Zentrum der Brau- und Getränkewissenschaften, indem sie die Chancen des Bologna-Prozesses nutzt: Der zum akademischen Grad „Diplom-Braumeister“ führende fünfsemestrige Studiengang, der eine einjährige Berufspraxis oder eine abgeschlossene Lehre als Brauer/Mälzer voraussetzt, wird zum Wintersemester 2010/11 dem Bologna-Format angepasst. THE ROLE We are looking for a technically strong, internationally minded expert to join our team as a contributor to TUMint’s engineering and technology education projects. This is not a purely administrative role, it calls for someone with deep domain knowledge who can engage credibly with academic content, faculty, curriculum design, and the specific challenges of building high-quality education programmes in complex international environments. You will work across multiple projects and thematic areas, contributing your technical expertise where it matters most: in the design of programme content, the assessment of academic quality, the development of partner capacity, and the promotion of technology entrepreneurship. The work will furthermore be done under the supervision of Professor Hussam Amrouch, who is the Head of the Chair of AI Processor Design at TUM and the Director of the Munich Center for Hight-Tech AI Chips (MACHT-AI). The Technische Universität München (TUM) and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation are sponsoring the expansion of the energy informatics research group, which is embedded in a recently created research center. The research center is located at the Department of Computer Science at TUM. Energy informatics is a new research area within the computer science / information systems community that investigates information age approaches to managing energy in a sustainable way. This includes the design and evaluation of system components (algorithms, data structures, interfaces, etc.) that allow for controlling energy demand to reach two goals: reducing the overall energy consumption and making electricity demand follow renewable supply. Machine learning on streaming data to predict renewable supply and demand as well as optimization-based control of flexible demand are of particular interest to the group. Use cases include buildings, electric mobility, and data centers. We are looking for highly motivated graduate students who would like to pursue a Ph.D. in this area.
