Head of AI Core Unit / Data Scientist - BioSysteM
04.12.2025, Wissenschaftliches Personal
We are looking for an Independent junior research group leader (m/f/d) with knowledge of data / AI science to set up and lead the AI Core Unit of the BioSysteM Cluster of Excellence as soon as possible. The position is initially for 4 years and can be extended until 31.12.2032.
About us
The BioSysteM Cluster of Excellence is an international research network in which scientists from Munich's two universities, the Helmholtz Zentrum München and the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry, collaborate on an interdisciplinary basis. Starting January 1, 2026, the cluster will be funded by the DFG as part of the Excellence Strategy of the German federal and state governments, with TUM serving as the administering university. The aim is to learn how to design and control biological systems in a targeted manner. An important aspect of this effort is the accurate organization, harmonization, and exchange of research data that will fuel the application of machine learning approaches. Defining standards and databases for experimental protocols and biosystem designs will be of critical importance for the establishment of the Munich Repository of Standardized Parts and Protocols (MRSPP). To address these needs, we want to establish a AI Core Unit as a central service that ensures the efficient application of AI tools within the cluster. We are looking for an Independent junior research group leader with a focus on data and AI Science to join us as soon as possible.
Your qualifications
- PhD in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics or related fields
- Experience in applied data science and machine learning
- Solid knowledge of scientific software engineering
- Expertise in analyzing omics data and/or imaging data
- Experience in conducting, ideally managing, interdisciplinary projects and communication
Your responsibilities
The Head of Unit will be responsible for the distribution of the tasks in the Unit, and oversee and support their execution:
- Provide mandatory introductory AI courses for new researchers in the cluster (in collaboration with the Munich Data Science Institute (MDSI)
- Provide advanced domain-specific AI training for the BioSysteM researchers
- Perform lab visits to consult, discuss and identify specific needs and opportunities for the application of AI techniques in the different research groups
- Work closely with scientists in research areas to perform advanced AI analysis
- Advise and support researchers in their programming tasks, perform scientific software engineering, and generate specific application programming interfaces
- Develop and monitor data harmonization within the cluster (in collaboration with data stewards and by using the MRSPP)
- Connect researchers working on similar problems and involve external AI experts (via the AI Advisory Board and the MDSI)
Our offer
We offer a full-time position as academic staff with the opportunity to lead a team of data scientists (domain specialists). The position will be limited to the funding period.
